weird electronic smell

setup involved...

roland SH-201 controlling a Future Retro XS ran through a Boss CE-2 and into a Roland KC-550 amp.

I'm thinking the smell came from the amp because i was playing louder than normal.. but there wasn't any loss of sound and no smoke... but there was this distinct smell of electronics... they smell of electronic things dying really

can playing loud **** up more than just speakers? if so, what?

will speakers make that smell when they're worked pretty hard?

are there any sounds that are dangerous to gear? i was using a bass patch i had made while effecting the cutoff freq with the mod wheel

any warning signs i should look out for or other precautions?

i really don't want to **** up my gear.. but I've also heard that the KC-550's speaker sucks and is replaceable with a higher quality one.

thx for any and all advice, information.

Bass = more energy

Loud = more energy

To sum it up, the combination of bass and loud made your amp work harder. Producing more energy and consequently getting warmer.

Getting warmer means that the components, power-transistors in particular, would get hotter, causing the smell.

New (and old) electronics can emit smell. If it smells burned, turn it off.

I would think that as long as it sounded good, the amp could handle it.

That´s cool. Have fun !

You may want to confirm the origin of the smell, and the age of the instrument or amp that's causing it.

Not to alarm you, but to quote Don from a previous thread smell may indicate a serious issue:

So, as the cap drys/vapors, it gets into your daily air. Multiply that with 50-100 other caps in other synths and you get the idea. Good thing is - it is very easy to recognize that smell, it is metallic, heavy and a little bit "acidic".

Second thing to worry about is the lead used in soldering of all the pcb's, contacts, etc. In case you broke synth's PCB in the bedroom... it would be a good idea to give it a damn good clean - a few times. That thing is very toxic.

thx for the heads up.

with the exception of the Boss CE-2 everything is fairly new.

I don't think lead is all that likely to vaporise much in normal use. Caps, yes. Sometimes, hot transistors, or resistors, can heat other components, such as caps, next to them. Caps can be highly carcinogenic. A bit of warm plastic packaging can also be enough to make a smell. Some very old electronics has cardboard circuit boards, which can heat, and catch fire. What fun. Another common electrical smell is from sparking. I think electricians and high voltage engineers become quite sensitive to that smell, as a sign of a hazardous condition.

yeah ventilate well - that's most important
then, don't eat or smoke during soldering jobs (I break that rule myself, smoking spliffs blasting a nice tune while soldering etc.)
however... solder fumes is normally evaporating flux, not lead fumes
lead vaporises at 3K degrees
that's very very hot.
and if you live in a place like I do (city in western europe) go outside and take a deep breath.
your lungs will fill up with small industrial waste particles
